The phenomenon is there for all to see. And on the need to regulate it focus, s increasingly the efforts of local administrators, with the aim of curbing the impoverishment of historic centers, from which fatally disappear - in a seemingly unstoppable process - residents.
There are more than 608 thousand accommodations available on the Airbnb platform in Italy in 2023, with supply concentrated mainly in three regions, which alone quote 35.4 percent: Tuscany (12.9 percent of the total), Sicily (11.4 percent) and Lombardy (11.1 percent). In fourth place is Puglia (8.9%) followed by Sardinia (8.4%), Lazio (8.3%), Campania (6.8%) and Veneto (5.7%). As for the employment rate, the highest level is in Lazio with 69.3 percent, followed by Veneto (62.5 percent) and Lombardy (60.3 percent). This emerges from the research Airbnb in Italy: the numbers of the phenomenon by Jfc, which the Ansa news agency publishes as a preview.
"With this report," says Massimo Feruzzi, sole director of Jfc, "we intend to provide the Italian tourism system with the numbers of the Airbnb phenomenon, which is undoubtedly a topic of daily discussion involving all tourist destinations. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to manage-especially for locations with greater international appeal-the relationship between residents and tourists (or, rather, the explosion of licenses for tourist rentals to be included in online platforms)." Jfc points out that there are in fact several municipalities that are "helplessly witnessing a gradual reduction in the stock of housing available to citizens, and the parallel increase in rents and the cost of housing, resulting in the displacement of residents from historic centers.
