"Know thyself." The most famous admonition of the Greek world provides a guiding beacon for this section. Understanding the whole cannot be separated from self-knowledge, which can and must extend to the species to which it belongs, to knowledge of the human experience understood as History; an anomalous evolutionary history within the landscape of animal populations inhabiting the planet. For in the here and now it is the past, rather than the future, that answers the questions.
